My Volunteer Work Experiences

In term 3, I went to my classmate Candice Xia’s housing estate. It is called: Qian Qiu Qing Yuan. I turned myself to be a cleaner. It’s very interesting and full of novelty.

On 29th of March, I arrived there. It’s a very quiet and harmony place. I met Candice in front of the gym. I also saw her dog. Its name is: Zai zai. She took me to their administration and asked for work. The server received us patiently, and then she telephoned the director. She said we should wait for the director. Ten minutes later, the director came in and gave us brooms and a dustpan. She told us to sweep the bicycle park. We went there quickly, it’s a huge area with big sums of bikes. So, we decided to divide this area into half. We began to work! There was a lot of garbage around bikes, I swept very carefully. Suddenly, a burst of wind blew through the windows. It made all the garbage out of the dustpan and I felt very mad. But the only way I could do is to sweep again and prevent dropping again. Finally, after two hours, we turned the dirty park into a clean place. We were very tired but very content.

A week after, on the 5th of April, I went there again. I wanted to try some work, so Candice borrowed two scoops from a cleaner. I asked what we could do by using them, she said that we could clean the grass. I still didn’t understand the meaning, so she explained to me that we could use the scoops to straighten out the yellow grass. It sounded interesting! So, we started to work! First, we cleaned the grass in front of Candice’s apartment. There was a lot of yellow and blasted grass. When I shoveled it, I felt it had a strong power and I nearly fell down. I couldn’t imagine that I would be labored when I shovel the grass! I was a little discouraged but I didn’t want to give up. At last, we finished. We also cleaned the grass near the lakes. Practice makes perfect, it became much easier after doing a lot. It lasted out about two hours and both of us were be drenched in sweat.

For the next three Sundays, I also went there to do cleaning work. The main courses were also sweeping the floor and cleaning the grass. Sometimes, we felt very tired, but we also achieved precious experiences. The director was very pleasant and praised us a lot and hoped we would come again next time.

During this volunteer work, I realized the difficulties to be a cleaner. I used to consider that cleaning was one of the easiest jobs. Now, I must change my mind because I have experienced on my own. It needs patience, carefulness and backbone. I think this work experience is very necessary to my future. I won’t forget this memory in my life.

Go to a performance

On 31st of December, the last day in 2008, I went to the Olympic Center with Jenny Fu. There would be held an over year concert.

This concert accompanied me to spend a sleepless and exciting night. About half past seven in the evening, we arrived in the infield. The whole place was in a mess, many crazy fans shouted loudly and the audio made a lot of sound. All voice gave me energy and let me feel blood boiling.

As I was waiting for, the concert began! Three hosts came to the stage and started talking to the audience. The theme of this concert was: Let me say love to you, music! The first singer was David Tao, from Taiwan. He brought three different types of songs and gave us a wonderful beginning. Then, some other pop stars showed their nice performances.

At 11’o clock, the whole atmosphere reached a climax. The famous singer from Singapore—JJ Lin, came to the stage. He is my favorite singer and full of talent. Many people screamed and clapped. He brought three songs and each song was very popular! And he became the most fashionable star in this concert. I also mentioned that a mid-aged man was making funny actions. I couldn’t stop laughing!

Around 12 o’clock, the whole infield was in revelry. Everybody sang pleasant songs and shaked their light sticks. Finally, fireworks started burning outside. I felt very tired but I thought it was the most meaningful way to welcome the New Year! I hope I will have a chance to watch it next year!

Act in a performance

On 19th of December, 2008, I acted in the drama called: The Taming of the Shrew. It was written by William Shakespeare and organized by Drama Club. The performance was a big success and we raised more than 8000 RMB for the charity.

We practiced a lot before, so we didn't feel very scared. That day morning, I got up very late with excitation, and was ready for the day. Around 4 o’clock in the afternoon, I went to the hallway and dressed up. Each performer couldn’t stop to look forward to the coming of that moment.

Finally, it came! The doors were opened, crowds of people flooded in and we all encouraged with each other. Lights were all turned on and the whole stage was turned into a middle ages picture. After a short introduction, performers came to the stage in succession. I saw a lot of teachers and students sitting here. During the acting, I also used some skills that we hadn’t ever used when we practiced. For example, I was in the last scene, we acted like a farewell. At last, the audiences clapped with all their might. After the performance, we shouted and teachers praised us a lot. On that way’s home, my feelings were very mixed. Other people could watch the actor’s brilliant perform, but no one would realized his hardships when he practiced except himself.

Going through this wonderful acing experience, I have learned how to say English in a dramatic way, the spirit of cooperating and the procedures of acting in English dramas. I also achieved an award with Rachel in 12-D. I hope I can join the drama next year!

My experinces in Public Event

On 13th of April, 2009, David Tao, our leader of Movie Club, invited the editor of Jiangsu Educational Channel. Her name is Jenny and she gave us a wonderful speech on the 2nd floor in GCA.

I decided to go to this public event because I am a member of Movie Club, we will make a comedy movie about GCA’s life after we take the provincial exams. So, this is a good chance to learn the importance of movies.

At noon, Ms. Morgan’s classroom was full of students. Jenny stood behind the platform and was giving out her speech. Her main point was about the edit in her channel. She introduced her career and one of her interview experience: One girl was the top student in her school, but one day, she was crazy about rock-and-roll music. She had a bold decision: Give up studying and start to play music. Everybody thought that she was mad! Even her mother sent her to the mental hospital, she still insisted her opinion. She built a band and went to Britain for further education. Now, she is devoting in protecting the environment. I was attracted by this true story. Then, we asked her a lot of questions about movie. For example, how to photo better, why the Chinese films always can’t as well as foreign films, etc. At last, she hoped that we would make a good film.

During this public event, I learned a lot about the procedures of movie and how to make a good movie. I felt very rich and satisfied.

Go to an exhibition by myself

On the afternoon of March 8, 2009, I went to the Museum of Nanjing with my father. It's free and there was an exhibition of Chinese lacquer works. China was among the first country to use paint. In Shang period, there were more advanced technology has become aristocratic luxury goods. Han and Wei periods were the golden age of Chinese lacquer process. Ming and Qing dynasties, lacquer process developed into national handicrafts. They formed a unique paints center.

When I entered the saloon, I saw a lot of fine artworks. Though they were protected by glass, I could also see them clearly. There were different kinds of lacquer works. For example, boxes, folding screens, teapots and so on. They all represent traditional Chinese cultural and agglomerate the wisdom of Chinese.
Among all these artworks, my favorite artwork is a painted throne in Qing Dynasty. Its height is 140cm, length is 150cm and width is 90cm. The color of the lacquer is red and the whole throne is carved with dragon stripes and bat stripes. It was set in Beijing and moved here. I like it very much because it looked very grand and let me think of the ambience in the palace.

I felt very excited about this exhibition because I love history and I learn more about Chinese history this time. Though I study more English than Chinese, I shouldn't forget our Chinese tradition and history. I hope I can see more exhibitions about Chinese history in the future!
